Bruce Reed, Tenor
March 2008 Bruce Reed, known for his gripping portrayals of the fuller lyric repertoire, has made a mark as one of America’s eminent tenors. Referring to his performance in Verdi’s Macbeth with the Indianapolis Opera, the Indianapolis Star found that "Tenor Bruce Reed only made me wish that Verdi had written more for Macduff." Over the course of his career, he has appeared with such large-scale companies as Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Diego Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Opera Company of Boston, Pittsburgh Opera, and the Canadian Opera, as well as with more regional companies as Cleveland, Arizona, Virginia, Indianapolis, Mobile, Palm Beach, Tampa, Rochester, Memphis, Syracuse, Orlando, and Shreveport Opera Companies, and with Central City Opera and the Spoleto Festival (USA). In 2006/07, he was part of the productions of Mefistofele (Faust) at Bob Jones University, Tosca (Cavaradossi) with New Rochelle Opera and Sacco & Vanzettiwith Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center. In addition, he also appeared in Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with Valdosta Symphony. Engagements in 2005 included tenor soloist in concerts of Puccini highlights with the Central Florida Symphony and a return to the Glimmerglass Opera as Tiberge in Massenet’s rarely-performed opera, Le Portrait de Manon. Prior, Mr. Reed successfully debuted with the Glimmerglass Opera as Nick in Fanciulla del West and as William Marshall in Blitzstein’s Regina with the Florida Grand Opera and Cassio in Otello with the Palm Beach Opera. Following his debut with the New York City Opera as Camille de Rosillon opposite Beverly Sills in The Merry Widow, Mr. Reed became a mainstay with the company for eight more seasons. He was especially associated with the roles of Tamino in The Magic Flute, Fenton in both Falstaff and The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Tonio in The Daughter of the Regiment. Also of note, Mr. Reed took his bow as Eisenstein in several well-received productions of Die Fledermaus – with the Anchorage, Utah Festival, Treasure Coast Opera Companies and with the Monterey Symphony Orchestra in California. He appeared as solo artist in several acclaimed Verdi concerts with both the South Bend and Korean Symphony Orchestras, as well as in enthusiastically received operatic concerts with the New Haven Symphony. Previously, the tenor made a notable debut with the Teatro Nacional in Santo Domingo as Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, a role he successfully repeated with the Gold Coast Opera in Florida. Other roles recently added to his repertoire include Sam Polk in Susannah and Macduff in Verdi’s Macbeth, both with Indianapolis Opera, and Don Jose in Carmen and Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, both with Gold Coast Opera. A favorite of Tito Capobianco, he was chosen to create the role of Il Cantatore in the American premiere of Zandonai’s Giulietta e Romeo, and performed as Percy opposite Katia Ricciarelli in Anna Bolena and as Edoardo in Verdi’s rarely-performed Un Giorno di Regno, all with San Diego Opera. He also performed as Des Grieux in Manon, which was Mr. Capobianco’s first production as Artistic Director with the Pittsburgh Opera. Other noteworthy engagements include Tamino with Opera Company of Philadelphia (conducted by Julius Rudel), the role of Luke in Opera Company of Boston’s American premiere of Tippett’s Ice Break (staged and conducted by Sarah Caldwell), and various productions directed by long-time supporter Lotfi Mansouri at the Canadian Opera in Toronto as Alfred in Die Fledermaus and Tamino in The Magic Flute (conducted by Reinhard Peters). Bruce Reed made his European debut at Italy’s Spoleto Festival in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (conducted by Christian Badea). He was on the roster of the Landestheater Linz in Austria for several seasons, performing such roles as Tonio, Fenton (Nicolai), Alfonso in Auber’s La Muette de Portici, and Romeo in Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette. Other notable European engagements include Faust in Boito’s Mefistofele at the Zurich Opera and his critically-acclaimed portrayal of Abraham in Josef Myslivecek’s Abramo ed Isacco, first with the Bruckner Orchestra in Linz and then in Essen, Germany with the Folkwang Kammerorchester. In concert, Mr. Reed appeared as soloist with the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Peter Nero). He has frequently performed with the Buffalo, Rochester, Evansville, and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as with the Syracuse and Savannah Symphonies. He has appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, both at Alice Tully Hall and the Kennedy Center. His repertoire includes Handel’s Messiah, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solennelle, and Verdi’s Requiem under such batons as Julius Rudel, Christopher Keene, and Christian Badea.
